At the Longwood Towers IT Centre, nearly 1000 people have come along to learn new skills since July 24th
last year.
Based in Common Road, Langley, Longwood Towers was set up to allow local residents free access to computers
in a friendly and fun environment.
The Centre is one of 16 UK Online Centres across Slough, which are based around the goal of enabling everyone
in the UK to get on board with ICT (Information and Communication Technology) facilities near their homes
and workplaces.
Many of Longwood's clients had never used a computer at all before coming along, and are now learning how
to send emails, surf the Internet and scan pictures and photos, amongst other new skills. Staff and volunteers
are always available to guide and encourage users through hands-on learning.
Each UK Online Centre is developed, organised and operated specifically with the needs of the local community
in mind. Many are found in youth clubs, sheltered housing, residents' clubs, schools and community centres.
In the supportive environment of the Centres, we can use the Internet to:
. Send emails - to friends and family, as well as to businesses
. Join 'online communities' and share information about jobs, places, medical conditions or hobbies
. Find out about local events, family history, benefits, travel and health
. Try out new versions of games and other software
It's a fact that ICT has changed the way we work, live and play, forever. Many people are seizing the opportunity
to come to the Centre and acquire the skills necessary to enjoy the wealth of choice the 'Digital Revolution'
has to offer:
. Businesses now rely on computers more than ever before, and knowledge of standard packages is essential
on today's CV
. Shopping can be carried out online - for everything from books to holidays to your weekly shop
. Sports results and updates can be broadcast instantly across a wide variety of media
Across Slough every single individual now has the opportunity to find out about, and use, information technology
and the Internet. There need be no fear any more of being left behind - at Slough UK Online Centres we
now have the chance to improve the quality of our lives, leam if we want to, and gain our own stake in the digital
economy..
